Parent following the same bedtime steps; baby settling with consistent routine

Some nights it feels like your child will only settle for one parent. You’re not imagining it and you haven’t “broken” anything. A few calm tweaks can get you back on the same team.

My tips

If you want to start balancing things so bedtime is calmer with you too, here are some ideas:

1. Keep routines identical, same timing, same steps, same phrases as your partner uses.

2. Let dad (or whoever your child behaves better for) take the lead for a few nights, then join together for a few bedtime routines so your toddler sees you both doing it.

3. Gradually take over, for example, dad does most of the routine but you do the last story or tuck-in, then ibaby-sleeps-better-for-one-parentncrease your role over time.

4. Stay calm and consistent, even if your child gets up, try to respond the same way each time, without frustration or too much conversation and be consistent. Don’t let your partner take over when it gets frustrating otherwise your toddler will know they can always do this and get a reaction from it.
